rest for your soul

Wouldn’t it be a relief to find out that being a grownup means asking for help like a child?

“Be much in secret prayer. Converse less with man and more with God.” George Whitefield

“[A]sk where the good way is and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls.” Jeremiah 6:16

encourage today

When you feel like giving up, somebody who remembers why you shouldn’t and reminds you is worth his weight in gold.

“Joses, whom the apostles nicknamed . . . Son of Encouragement. . . .” Acts 4:36

Father, free me from self-focus so that I can encourage today.

dangerous lies

When somebody wrongs you and you hold onto that wrong and let it fester, you’ll soon start to believe two dangerous lies -- he’s nothing but wrong, and you’re nothing but right.

“Forgiveness flounders because I exclude the enemy from the community of humans even as I exclude myself from the community of sinners.” Miroslav Volf

“You shall not . . . bear a grudge, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Leviticus 19:18

more alive

The more alive you are inside, the more you can see and hear and appreciate.

“God, who gives life to the dead. . . .” Romans 4:17

Father, enliven me today so that I won’t miss even one opportunity to thank You and enjoy.

clean and pure

When circumstances push you outside your comfort zone and you see your selfish self unmasked, it’s a relief to imagine being loved into clean and pure.

“Though your sins and faults and offenses are like scarlet, they will be as white as snow. . . .” Isaiah 1:18

Father, thank You for Your kind and comforting promise of a clean and pure heart someday.

dreary and thankless

Trying to get enough love (and attention and affection and admiration) is a dreary and thankless task. No matter how hard you work, you never quite get there. Giving is just the opposite.

“[L]ove one another. . . . Keep my commandments . . . that My joy may be in you. . . .” John 13:34; 15:11
