free in sharing

When you’re trying to hang on to what you have, other people look like competition. When you’re free in sharing, they look like friends.

“Come in, Sir, for you are weary, and the night is cold out there. . . . What we have, we have to share.” Victor Hugo, Les Miserables

“[B]e . . . generous, free in sharing. . . .” 1 Timothy 6:18

missing joy

When you’re in the habit of looking for what’s wrong with people, you’re in the habit of missing a lot of joy.

“Whoever views his neighbor with contempt and sees him as insignificant lacks wisdom. . . .” Proverbs 11:12

“[A]m I my neighbor’s enemy. . . .?” George Macdonald

into Your hands

The more you love somebody, the harder and more important it is to keep giving him away.

Father, into Your hands I commit ______. Protect and heal and comfort him today. Be for him everything that I’m too small to be. From Luke 23:46

“Everything is safe which we commit to Him, and nothing is really safe which is not so committed.” A. W. Tozer

giving and getting

You can spend today angling for what you want and need and should have, or you can take your eyes off yourself and see what you can do for the people around you. By bedtime, you’ll feel the difference.

“[S]erve one another in love.” Galatians 5:13

Father, teach me today that giving is a far happier thing than getting.

stop and ask

Every once in a while, it’s a good idea to stop and ask yourself why you’re eating (or drinking or talking). There are all sorts of reasons. Some are better than others.

HALT: am I (emotionally) Hungry, Angry, Lonely or Tired?

“Watch over your heart with all diligence. . . .” Proverbs 4:23

staying on your side

You can’t make somebody else content, but you can make yourself miserable trying. It’s a lot healthier to keep staying on your side of the fence and keep letting him choose for himself.

“We are to love one another, not be one another.” Henry Townsend

“[C]hoose for yourselves today. . . .” Joshua 24:15
