daily bread

If autonomy and self-reliance were good for us, God probably would’ve told us to ask for monthly (or yearly) bread instead.

“When you pray, say, 'Father, . . . [g]ive us each day our daily bread . . . and lead us. . . .’” Luke 11:2-4

“Dear Father, take this day’s life into Thine own keeping. . . . Direct all my energies. Instruct my mind. Sustain my will.” John Baillie

both-and

We usually see tough circumstances and joy as either-or. God says they’re both-and. It’s one of His best surprises.

“Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice and be glad in the LORD. . . .” Habakkuk 3:17-18

Father, in all the ups and downs of this day, be my constant joy.

incarnations

If you see people as interruptions, it’s impossible to really love them. If you see them as incarnations, it’s impossible not to.

“[W]hatever you d[o] for my brothers and sisters, even the least of them, you d[o] for Me.” Jesus of Nazareth, Matthew 25:40

Lord, give me Your eyes today, that I might see the mystery of You in others.

instead

If you only focus on your wants and needs and to-do’s today and I only focus on mine, we’ll pass like ships in the night. If we choose you-first and thank-you instead, we’ll see (and enjoy) each other instead.

“[S]elf-centeredness destroys relationships.” Tim Keller

Father, please create in me a clean, other-centered heart. From Psalm 51:10

a little child

A little child doesn’t know much about denial and repression and muscling through on his own.

“Allow the little child . . . (in you) to come to Me. Don’t restrain or hinder or forbid [him].” Mark 10:14 (parenthetical added)

“Pour out your heart to Him.” Psalm 62:8

the shining answer

Hard times (and never enough time) would hurt a lot less if we remembered the shining answer to is-this-all-there-is.

“What if life is a dress rehearsal? What if the real production is about to begin?” John Eldredge

“[T]he sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that will be revealed to and in us.” Romans 8:18
