unmasked

What if, when I don’t like somebody, it’s really her masks that I don’t like? I wonder what would happen if I got in the habit of imagining her on her knees, unmasked.

“A man is what he is on his knees before God, and nothing more.” Robert Murray McCheyne

Father, please teach me to see ______ as You see her – looking at her heart and not at her outward appearance. From 1 Samuel 16:7

rest awhile

What are you anxious about? What would it feel like to let God carry that anxious thing, just for today?

Lord, every time that anxious thing comes to mind today, remind me to hand it gladly to You and rest awhile. From 1 Peter 5:7

“Come now, little one. . . . Put aside your weighty cares . . . and rest awhile in Him.” Anselm of Canterbury

rest

Unceasing restlessness is a pretty good caption for modern life. Maybe calling our own shots and following our own paths isn’t such a great idea after all.

“The Lord said, ‘Ask where the good path is and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls.’ But they said, ‘We will not. . . .’” Jeremiah 6:16

“[O]ur unceasing restlessness.” A. W. Tozer

the kind truth

The worst thing about downward-spiral days is feeling like you’ll be in a tailspin forever. You won’t, and that’s the kind truth.

“Has His lovingkindness vanished forever?” Psalm 77:8

“His lovingkindnesses never end. . . .  They are new and fresh every morning.” Lamentations 3:22-23

two ways

There are two ways to look a person. You can highlight all her wrongs and wrinkles and flaws, or you can imagine her without them.

“Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.” Luke 6:31

Father, help me to look at _____ today as I would want her to look at me.

unoccupied

It’s easy to get so used to being busy that you miss the good things that only happen when you’re unoccupied. That’s why it’s so important to send the crowds (of to-do’s and electronics and other people) away for a little while every day.

“After sending the crowds away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray.” Matthew 14:23

“[A] thousand broken and missed things, tens of thousands, lie in the wake of all the rushing. . . .” Ann Voskamp
