in all the right order

When you spread out all your broken and scattered and even ugly pieces in front of somebody and she comes closer anyway, you start to get whole.

“She is a friend of mind. . . . The pieces I am, she gather them and give them back to me in all the right order.” Toni Morrison

“[B]earing with each other. . . .” Colossians 3:13

this steep path

If you’re feeling way too small and unsteady for this steep path of a day, the best thing to do is ask for help.

Father, on my own, I am small and weak and self-centered. Be large and strong and open-hearted for me.

“The Lord makes my feet like the feet of a deer, so that I can walk in high, mountainous places.” Habakkuk 3:19

kind words

This morning, a friend spoke kind, I-understand words that were sweetly healing. Now I want to be careful to speak well, too.

“Kind words are like a honeycomb – sweet to the soul and healing to the body.” Proverbs 16:24

“[B]e careful little mouth what you say. . . .” A child’s song

the habit of entrusting

When you’ve been in the habit of worrying about somebody you love and carrying his pain for a long time, stopping (even for an hour) feels light as a feather. Sometimes you don’t realize how heavy a burden is until you put it down for a while.

“I trust You to lift [______] up and carry him.” Psalm 143:8

Lord, please give me the humility and courage to cultivate the habit of entrusting ______ to You.

a great leap

Wanting to shine comes naturally. Wanting everybody else to shine instead is a great leap (and a great relief).

“God’s way of thinking is different than ours. And the whole point is that we should take the great leap from our own thoughts to those of God.” Dr. Paul Tournier

“Do nothing out of selfish ambition. . . . Rather, with humility of mind, value others above yourself.” Philippians 2:3

a lovely creature

When you get so tired of yourself that you want to change no matter what it takes, God is already at work.

“‘Rosamond,’ [the wise woman] said, ‘all this time . . . I have been doing what I could to make you a lovely creature. . . .  If you please to come . . . to me, I will help you . . . to be good and lovely.’” From a fairy tale by George Macdonald

“God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what is good and pleasing and delightful.” Philippians 2:13
