wide awake

Whenever you see an hour or a job or a meeting or a season as just something to get behind you, you’re sure to miss a lot that you would have seen and savored if you had been wide awake.

“Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?” Mary Oliver

“[B]ut when they became fully awake, they saw. . . .” Luke 9:32

lightly

When you remember that your small part in things is in fact only a small (and well-accompanied) part, you’re free to live it lightly.

“God was managing nicely before [you] joined the firm and will continue to cope after [you] have returned to dust.” Margaret Guenther

“I will not be afraid, because You are close beside me.” Psalm 23:4

an unexpected pleasure

When you resent somebody, the againstness blinds you to his beauty. No wonder stopping is such an unexpected pleasure.

“Anger is passionate againstness. Resentment is a special, and usually protracted, form of anger. . . .” Cornelius Plantinga

Lord, please melt my resentment toward _____ so that I can see and enjoy his unfading beauty. From 1 Peter 3:4

not trying

When you're used to trying hard to be valued, not trying feels like a river of relief.

"Look at the birds, free and unfettered . . . in God's care. Aren't you far, far more valuable to Him. . . ?" Matthew 6:26

“One of the wonderful results of my consciousness of God’s staggering love for me as I am is a freedom not to be who I should be or who others want me to be. I can be who I really am.” Brennan Manning

well cared for

When you remember that you are well cared for, fearful what-if and what-next questions quiet down and let you rest.

“But as I raved . . . /Me thoughts I heard one calling, Child/And I replied, My Lord.” George Herbert

“He cares for His flock like a shepherd. . . .” Isaiah 40:11

space for the other

When you meet somebody who says you-first with his time and attention, you get an inviting glimpse of things as they were meant to be.

Father, make my heart a spacious place, that I, too, might be gracious and giving all day long. From Psalm 37:26

“Hospitality is giving space for the other in the love of God.” Dr. James Houston
