fears

Fears weigh you down and make you sick and ruin your joy. No good parent wants to see his child weighed down and sick and ruined.

“Don’t panic. I’m with you. There’s no need to fear, because I’m your God. I’ll give you strength. I’ll help you. I’ll hold you steady and keep a firm grip on you.” Isaiah 41:10 (The Message)

Father, please give me the courage to let Your love heal my fears.

very good sense

If God were always and everywhere among us and always and everywhere for us, it would make very good sense to look for Him today always and everywhere.

“We may ignore, but we can nowhere evade, the presence of God. The world is crowded with Him. He walks everywhere incognito.” C. S. Lewis

“Jesus said to them . . . ‘I am among you as one who serves.’” Luke 22:25, 27

ceasing and resting

Imagine seven days in a row, all crowded with work and have-to, with seven more coming right behind them. Now imagine having one whole day in between, for nothing but resting and enjoying and looking up and remembering thank-you.

“We do not stop because we are finished. . . . We stop because it is time to stop.” Wayne Muller

“Six days you shall labor . . . but the seventh day is a day of ceasing and resting. . . .” Exodus 20:9-10

becoming real

Becoming real isn’t easy. It helps to have a friend who is absolutely certain that you’ll get there.

“[B]y the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don't matter at all, because once you are Real you can't be ugly. . . .” The Skin Horse to the Velveteen Rabbit (by Margery Williams)

“I am absolutely certain that God, who began the good work within you, will complete it perfectly. . . .” Philippians 1:6

through me

Trying to love somebody out of my own paltry reserves doesn’t work very well. Maybe that’s because I’m not supposed to.

Father, You are intimately acquainted with all _____’s ways. You wove her together in her mother’s womb, and she’s never off Your mind. Please love her fervently through me today. From Psalm 139

“Love one another . . . fervently.” 1 Peter 1:22

taking the day off

When you wake up with an it’s-all-up-to-me headache, remembering that it isn’t feels like taking the day off.

Father, thank You for the relief of remembering that I can work hard and happily today without worrying about what it will amount to. Only You can make things fruitful. From John 15:4-5

“Today . . . I’m letting all the voodoos of ambition sleep. . . . I’m taking the day off.” Mary Oliver
