like a little child

Being powerful and self-reliant and independent will open a lot of doors, but not the most important one.

“Anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” Mark 10:15

Little by little and choice by choice, please give me the courage to rely on You like a little child.

returning and resting

The tougher your circumstances get, the more relief you feel when you remember to give up control.

“‘If you hold on to the handle,’ she said, ‘it’s easier to maintain the illusion of control. But it’s more fun if you just let the wind carry you.’” Brian Andreas

“In returning to Me and resting in Me, you will be helped and liberated.” Isaiah 30:15

act as if

When you’ve decided that somebody close to you doesn’t deserve your kindness or time or forgiveness or attention, act as if she does (for both your sakes).

“Do not judge. . . . Pardon and release. . . . Give. . . .” Luke 6:37-38

“We should be rigorous in judging ourselves and gracious in judging others.” John Wesley

affection takes time

If you keep your eyes glued to your to-do list today, you might get a lot done, but it might not matter much by next week.

“Affection takes time.” Marva Dawn

“Love each other with brotherly affection and take delight in honoring each other.” Romans 12:10

a loosened spirit

Imagine being so sure of God that you don’t have to be sure of anything else.

“I have learned to be quite content whatever my circumstances. . . . I can make it through anything in the One who makes me who I am.” Philippians 4:11

“He danced along the dingy Days. . . . What Liberty a loosened spirit brings.” Emily Dickinson

fresh air

Under the blue Maine sky, there are wide open spaces where a prison used to be. All the cells and iron bars and locked doors are gone. Now there’s only fresh air.

Father, thank you for freeing me little by little from everything that imprisons. Please free me a little bit more today.

“We find ourselves standing where we always hoped we might stand – out in the wide open spaces of God’s grace. . . .” Romans 5:2
