every small chance

When you’re looking for every small chance to say or do something good for the good of the people around you, you’re not looking at yourself (which is its own reward).

“[D]o good . . . expecting nothing in return. . . .” Luke 6:35

“You don’t think your way into a new kind of living. You live your way into a new kind of thinking.” Henri Nouwen

against the world's weather

Sometimes the kindest thing you can do for a person is to imagine him unafraid.

“The original shimmering self gets buried so deep that most of us end up hardly living out of it at all. Instead, we live out of all the other selves, which we are constantly putting on and taking off like coats and hats against the world's weather.” Frederick Buechner

Father, please help me to see _____ through Your kind eyes. From 1 Samuel 16:7

dancing feet

When you’ve been tying yourself in knots trying to make a relationship work and then you (really) realize that you can be whole and happy even if it doesn’t, it’s hard to keep your dancing feet still.

“If you really want to be happy, nobody can stop you.” Unknown

“You have turned my mourning into dancing. . . . I will give You thanks forever.” Psalm 30:11-12

thank you instead

If there is one thing about you that you spend a lot of time disliking, why not try saying thank you instead (unless it’s the sort of thing that God dislikes, too)?

“You created my inmost being. You wove me together in my mother’s womb. Thank You. . . .” Psalm 139:13-14

“Self-rejection is the greatest enemy of the spiritual life because it contradicts the sacred voice that calls us the beloved.” Henri Nouwen

no matter what it takes

Even when she can’t remember, after decades together, who he is, he keeps right on holding her hand and comforting her and waiting for her. He is a lesson in loving.

“Today, no matter what it takes, we ride home together.” Brian Andreas

“If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels but do not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.” 1 Corinthians 13:1

from your shoulders

If you tried to carry all your teeming to-dos and sorrows by yourself yesterday, you know how you don’t want to live today.

“[W]e learn to let God take care of us – not by becoming passive and lazy, but in the freedom of giving up our feeble attempts to be God in our own lives.” Marva Dawn

“I will take the load from your shoulders.” Psalm 81:6
