every small deight

When you wake up whining inside (about being too busy or unappreciated or whatever), you have a choice. You can spend the rest of the day parched and thirsty, or you can decide to drink in every small delight.

“It is certain that the more you try to [give thanks], the more you will see how your path and your lying down are beset with mercies. . . .” Priscilla Maurice

“You give them drink from the river of Your delights.” Psalm 36:8

take five minutes

When you take five minutes to remember all your reasons for saying thank-you, the fears and grumblings lose their grip and leave you free to enjoy.

“I was so troubled. . . . Then I said, . . . ‘I will recall and think about all that You have done in the past. I will remember Your wonderful deeds. . . .’” Psalm 77:4, 10-11

Father, please remind me today to give back to You at least five minutes of thanksgiving.

look up to you

If I knew that the real you could show me God in a way that nobody else could, I wouldn’t judge you or overlook you or compete with you. I would look up to you with bated breath.

“God give me the grace to be humble before you, my brother, . . . [so that I] look up to you for the revealing of God which you and no one else can give.” George Macdonald

“In humility, value others. . . .” Philippians 2:3

when the giver delights

The things that God loves always make you more alive.

“God loves it when the giver delights in the giving.” 2 Corinthians 9:7

“We do not live better when we . . . refuse to share, stop giving and lock ourselves up in our own comforts. Such a life is nothing less than slow suicide.” Pope Francis

stopping here and there

When you get in the habit of stopping here and there (even on busy days) to watch and savor, a funny thing happens – you begin to see everything else a little more clearly.

“[S]topping here/to watch his woods fill up with snow.” Robert Frost

“He put His hands on [the blind man’s] eyes, and the man looked intently and was restored and began to see everything clearly.” Mark 8:25

a whole day of small yeses

By bedtime tonight, you might have the great pleasure of looking back over a whole day of small yeses.

“The world needs people who will allow time for God to recreate them, play with them, touch them as an Artist. . . .” Don Postema

"The Lord . . . says, 'In returning to Me and resting in Me, you will be rescued and set free, . . . but you said no. . . .’” Isaiah 30:15
