the sea

It doesn’t much matter how big and good God will always be until you start to realize that you’re not.

“You are the sea.  Although I experience many ups and downs . . . , you remain the same. . . .  O Lord, sea of love and goodness, let me not fear too much the storms and winds of my daily life, and let me know that there is ebb and flow but that the sea remains the sea.  Amen.” Vincent Van Gogh

“[T]he same yesterday, today and forever.” Hebrews 13:8

going off-road

Sometimes going off-road changes you for good.

“We want lives of simple, predictable ease -- smooth, even trails as far as the eye can see -- but God likes to go off-road. . . .  The challenges that make our hearts leap and stomachs churn invariably . . . grant measures of wisdom and joy we would not experience otherwise. . . .” Tony Snow

“Do not let your heart be troubled. . . .  Trust Me.” John 14:1

little by little

There’s a world of difference between trying to write the script yourself and (little by little) gladly giving it up.

“[The hobbit] liked visitors, but he liked to know them before they arrived, and he preferred to ask them himself.” J. R. R. Tolkien

“I have put my life into Your hands.” Psalm 31:5

space

It’s often kinder (and harder) to give a person space for thinking and feeling and struggling than to crowd that space with well-intentioned words.

“He who restrains his lips is wise.” Proverbs 10:19

“[T]o be humble is to remember that we are not God.” Christine Paintner

against all odds

Sometimes, against all odds, loss and stripping away turn out to be great gain.

“Since my house burned down/I now own a better view/of the rising moon.” Mizuta Masahide

“[A] time to mourn, and a time to dance. . . .” Ecclesiastes 3:4

please change me

When you give somebody a lot (of time or energy or whatever you have) and he doesn’t thank you, you can live in a soup of resentment, or you can ask to be changed.

“God loves it when the giver delights in giving.” 2 Corinthians 9:7

Father, please change me into a giver who delights in giving.
