Sometimes we do our worst thinking about the very best things, like who God is. We have trouble imagining gracious and compassionate and slow to anger and overflowing with lovingkindness, so we make a few substitutions, like tit-for-tat and nice-but-overworked and hard-to-please. We don’t do it on purpose. It just comes naturally. And it happens so gradually that we hardly even notice He’s looking more like us every day.
