If you had seen the handful of dull, lumpy amaryllis bulbs that lived for weeks on our kitchen counter amidst the potatoes and onions, you would be stunned and amazed if you could see them now—their tall, grass-green stems, leaning always into the light, bearing impossible gossamer blossoms, some still closed, some only beginning to peak out, and some wide-open in all their glory.
I wonder: would we be stunned and amazed if we could see ourselves, not just as we are today, but as we will be when everything that mars our beauty finally falls away, and we are wide-open in all our glory, leaning always into the light?
