good friday

Today is Good Friday.  It's warm and beautiful, and the sky is blue.  A lot of people have the day off.  It’s easy to lounge or do chores.  It’s easy to forget why we have the day off and why it’s called “good.”  It’s easy to forget, because remembering is expensive.  What if it’s true?  What if God let Himself be tortured and humiliated and murdered to rescue me?  What if that’s what I remembered on Good Friday?  How would I say thank you?

“Christianity has not been tried and found wanting.  It has been found difficult and not tried.” G. K. Chesterton

“Now from the sixth hour (noon), darkness fell upon all the land until the ninth hour.  And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying . . . ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’ . . . .  And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit.  And behold the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom, and the earth shook, and the rocks were split. . . .   Now the centurion and those who were with him keeping guard over Jesus, when they saw the earthquake and the things that were happening, became very frightened and said, ‘Truly, this was the Son of God.’” Matthew 27:45-54.

easter morning

"On the third day, the friends of Christ coming at daybreak to the place found the grave empty and the stone rolled away.  In varying ways they realized the new wonder; but even they hardly realized that the world had died in the night.  What they were looking at was the first day of a new creation, with a new heaven and a new earth; and in a semblance of the gardener God walked again in the garden, in the cool not of the evening but the dawn."      The Everlasting Man, G. K. Chesterton

"Rise, heart; thy Lord is risen.”

George Herbert
