silver linings

Hiding in places like busyness or the frig or a house or other people doesn’t work in the worst of times, which is why the worst of times always have silver linings.

“[E]very one of us is expert in inventing idols (false gods).” John Calvin (parenthetical added)

“I have made the Lord my refuge.” Psalm 73:28

whiny thoughts

When you remember that you’re not your own, you don’t have to entertain all the whiny thoughts of what you deserve and how much better today would be if only.

“I am no longer my own, but Yours.  Put me to what you will.” John Wesley

“It is He who has made us, and we are His.” Psalm 100:3

right and refreshing

Yesterday, on a crowded and very delayed flight, (almost) everybody stayed seated until all the active-duty military folks got off. It reminded me how right and refreshing a free you-first feels.

“[W]ith humility of mind, regard one another as more important than yourselves.” Philippians 2:3

Father, please satisfy me with Your love today, so that I’ll be able to see and welcome chances to put others first.

water into wine

When you’re facing a day that’s way outside your comfort zone, you can either hold your nose and muscle through, or you can invite God in. By nightfall, you’ll know whether He still turns water into wine.

"'They have no wine.’ . . . . Jesus said, ‘Fill the jars with water. . . .’ The head waiter tasted the water which had become . . . the best wine.” John 2:3, 7-9

Father, I have no resources for this day, but my eyes are on You.

enjoy the process

It’s hard to live from chore to chore, just getting the dishes or commute or diapers done and over with, when you’re with someone who loves you.

“I see that the Lord is continually with me. . . . Therefore my heart is glad. . . .” Acts 2:25-26

Father, in the warmth of Your friendship, teach me to enjoy the process today.

giving thanks

Nine times out of ten, am I too busy or blind to come back giving thanks?

“One of [the ten lepers] . . . came back . . . giving thanks. . . . Jesus asked, ‘Were not all ten healed? Where are the other nine?’” Luke 17:15-17

Father, please remind me, over and over again today, to come back giving thanks.
