familiarity

Familiarity tends to breed contempt for the person close to you until you remember who made her and formed her.

“The Lord . . . made [her] and formed [her] from the womb. . . .” Isaiah 44:2

Father, make me careful today, in word and tone and gesture, to honor the one You made.

how deep?

What if, no matter how deep your brokenness and wrong turns and bad choices go, God’s love goes deeper?

“God . . . [is] drawn to man. . . . It is as though the sun felt for the sunflower the same powerful attraction that sunflower feels for the sun.” Patrick Henry Reardon

“The Lord [said], ‘I have loved you with a forever love; therefore, I have drawn you with lovingkindness.’” Jeremiah 31:3

wise and good

If someone wise and good were speaking, it would be wise and good to listen.

“The most precious thing of all is the possibility of being . . . the recipient of thoughts that come from God.” Dr. Paul Tournier

“And all the people would get up early in the morning to hear Him. . . .” Luke 21:38

on holy ground

If the way you treat the thirsty person beside you is the way you treat God, you’re always on holy ground.

“Then the King will say . . . ‘I was thirsty, and you gave me something to drink. . . . Whatever you did for one of the least . . . you did for me.’” Matthew 25:34-35, 40

Father, my own ideas about who matters and what matters are all upside-down. Please change me.

weight and wonder

When the time to trust comes but you don’t, when you can’t think of a reason you should be loved but you are, you feel the weight and wonder of grace.

“My God, what is a heart?/That thou shouldst it so eye and woo . . ./As if that thou hadst nothing else to do?” George Herbert

“[T]he incomparable riches of His grace. . . .” Ephesians 2:7

fresh as a daisy

Hiding all the pain and shame and disappointment makes you sick and tired. Coming into the light instead might hurt, but it leaves you clean and fresh as a daisy.

“You can turn to God with absolute confidence, bringing to him all your failures and sorrows. Your God is infinitely generous.” Brother Lawrence

“Come, let us return to the Lord. . . . And He will come to us . . . like the spring rain watering the earth.” Hosea 6:1, 3
