paper and pigeons

Give a very young child a present, and the wrapping paper is as much fun as what’s inside. Take him to the zoo, and the pigeons are as wondrous as the giraffes. Maybe the younger you grow, the farther you get from been-there-done-that.

Jaded: bored or lacking enthusiasm

“[U]nless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 18:3

satisfied

There’s nothing wrong with accolades and ownership and accomplishments as long as you’re not counting on them to fill you up.

"There are two ways to get enough. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less." G. K. Chesterton

“‘My people shall be satisfied and fulfilled and satiated with My goodness,’ declares the Lord.” Jeremiah 31:14

the window

Do you ever wish you could see what God is like?

“The cross is the surest, truest and deepest window on the very heart and character of the living and loving God. . . .” N. T. Wright

“For God so loved . . . that He gave. . . .” John 3:16

minutes

If the minutes of this day belong to you, you’re free to hoard them or waste them or use them for you own advantage. But what if they don’t?

“Everything we have comes from You, and we have given You back only what You first gave us.” 1 Chronicles 29:14

Father, remind me often today that my time is Yours, so that, at bedtime, I may look back over the day with joy.

let the hurt help

When people let you down, you can either circle the wagons so it won’t happen again, or you can let the hurt help you to see (and give) what other people need.

“Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. . . . Lock it up safe . . . [and] it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable.” C. S. Lewis

“Be . . . courageous. . . . [Y]our God . . . will not fail you. . . .” Deuteronomy 31:6

a way out

Every choice to put somebody else’s comfort or need or reputation ahead of your own is a baby step out of me-first jail.

“[L]ove of our neighbor is the only door out of the dungeon of self. . . .” George Macdonald

“When you are tempted, He will provide a way out. . . .” 1 Corinthians 10:13
