in your shoes

There’s a world of difference between a God who watches from far away frowning and One who walks in your shoes.

“God is closer to us than we are to ourselves.” St. Augustine

“[He] sympathize[s] with our weaknesses, . . . [having] been tested and tried . . . just as we are. . . .” Hebrews 4:15

getting older

What if getting older meant being even more grateful tomorrow than you are today?

“True Christians consider themselves not as satisfying some rigorous creditor, but as discharging a debt of gratitude.” William Wilberforce

“Come and listen . . . and I will tell of what He has done for my soul.” Psalm 66:16

on the inside

When life feels like hurry-up-and-wait on the outside, God might be doing wondrous things on the inside.

“You feel like running, but life is on a stroll. This is how God does things.” Donald Miller

“Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7

come now

When someone you love is struggling, the pain of right now feels like forever. The best thing you can do for him is keep remembering that it isn’t.

“Encourage the exhausted . . . . Say to those with anxious hearts . . . ‘Do not be afraid. Your God will come. . . .’” Isaiah 35:3-4

“Come, Star and Guide of those who sail amidst tempests. You are the Haven of the tossed and shipwrecked. Come now. . . .” St. Augustine

protected

When hard and scary things happen, you see who you really are -- a small and helpless child, walking through uncharted territory, protected.

“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me. . . .” Psalm 23:4

Father, help me to remember that You are with me every minute of this day, especially when it doesn’t feel like You are with me.

saying I-will

When times are tough, saying I-will to good things is harder and more important than ever.

“I will give You thanks . . . [and] I will sing . . . [t]hough I walk in the midst of trouble. . . .” Psalm 138:1, 7

“Gratitude fills.  Grumbling drains.  The choice is ours.” Richard Swenson
