why not?

Why not decide right now to spend today looking for things to be thankful for? There’s nothing to lose, and by tonight we’d know how much there is to gain.

“The unthankful heart . . . discovers no mercies; but let the thankful heart sweep through the day and, as the magnet finds the iron, so it will find, in every hour, some heavenly blessings.” Henry Ward Beecher

“I will give thanks to the Lord with all my heart (today).” Psalm 111:1 (parenthetical added)

choice by choice

If you choose to be gruff and ungracious to somebody today because you don’t like him, you’ll probably like him even less by tomorrow. If you choose to show him small kindnesses instead, chances are you’ll soon like him (and yourself) a lot more.

“As the heavens are higher than the earth, so My ways are higher than your ways. . . .” Isaiah 55:9

Father, help me to live Your higher ways today, choice by choice.

habits that hurt

The more you love people, the more you hate the habits that hurt them.

“[T]he Lord hates . . . haughty, arrogant, disdainful eyes. . . .” Proverbs 6:16-17

“Could you [but] see what every stirring of pride does to your soul, you would beg of everything you meet to tear the viper from you. . . .” William Law

gratis

When somebody wrongs you and you won’t forgive, certain prayers will be dangerous until you change your mind.

“[F]orgive me my trespasses, just as I forgive _____ who trespasses against me.” From Matthew 6:12

Father, please make me willing to forgive _____ gratis, just as you forgive me.

Gratis: free of charge; as a gracious kindness

mindful instead

If you decide right now to slow down and say thank-you every time you eat and drink today, you probably won’t want to go back to autopilot tomorrow.

Father, so often I eat and drink mindlessly, preoccupied and unaware. Please remind me today to be thankful and mindful instead. From 1 Corinthians 10:31

“In everything give thanks. . . .” 1 Thessalonians 5:18

off a duck's back

When somebody important sees you with contempt, your heart won’t know how very wrong he is until a stronger, kinder Voice convinces you.

Father, I want to be so sure of Your love that all contempt rolls off me like water off a duck’s back.

“May Your lovingkindness enter into me, O Lord. . . . Then I will be able to respond to the one who shows contemptuous disapproval of me.” Psalm 119:41-42
