A few days ago, I sat in my office surrounded by box after box of files. I had known for months that I would have to go through each box, paper by paper, and I had been dreading it for months. Now the time had come.
It reminded me of Anne Lamott’s ten-year-old brother sitting sadly at his kitchen table surrounded by unopened bird books and blank paper--a three-month-long school project on birds that now had to be done in one night. The time had come. His father sat down beside him, put his arm around him and said, “Bird by bird, buddy. Just take it bird by bird.”
So I did. I just took it bird by bird--box by box, paper by paper, without worrying about all the unopened boxes--as if I were a child, too.
Father, I want to live bird-by-bird all day today, leaving tomorrow in your good hands.
