lead us home

Sometimes the very things that break our hearts lead us home.

“When Jesus tells us about his Father, we distrust him . . . but when he confides to us that he is ‘acquainted with grief,’ we listen, for that also is an acquaintance of our own.” Emily Dickinson

“He was . . . a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.” Isaiah 53:3

deep down

If you saw yourself today with compassion and grace, would that be a big change?

“The Lord is compassionate and gracious. . . .” Psalm 103:8

“I am strongly of the opinion that 95% of us wish, deep down, that we were someone else.” Dr. Archibald Hart

whole and unmarred

What if we had eyes to see ourselves (and each other) the way a good parent sees his child – as if he were already whole and unmarred?

“I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened. . . .” Ephesians 1:18

“It is the image of God reflected in you that so enrages hell; it is this at which the demons hurl their mightiest weapons.” William Gurnall

a true friend

When you have a friend who has the courage to point out your blind spots, you have a true friend.

Blind spot: an area where a person’s view is obstructed

“Faithful are the wounds of a friend. . . .” Proverbs 27:6

a very good thing

It’s hard to feel self-sufficient when you’re facing tough and painful circumstances, and that is a very good thing.

“Let me fly from myself and take refuge in Thee. . . . Let me distrust myself and put my trust in Thee.” St. Augustine

"[U]nder His wings you will find refuge. . . . You will not fear the terror of night or the arrow that flies by day. . . ." Psalm 91:4-5

look deeper

If the unlovely things in the person beside you aren’t the real person, why not look deeper?

“If any one say, . . . ‘Can you deny that that person is unlovely?’ . . . I answer . . . ‘The thing that now makes you dislike him is separable from him . . . [and] makes him . . . so much less himself. . . .’” George Macdonald

“Why do you regard your brother with contempt?” Romans 14:10
